The Worst Oscar Dresses of All Time

Awards season is where the fashion elite showcase their impeccable style. The downside? For every perfect ensemble there is an equally dreadful gown that cannot be forgotten. Call it Newtons Law of Fashion, if you will.

We have compiled a list of the worst Oscar dresses of all time. But first, let us take some time to thank these celebrities for their horrific choices, because without them, this list wouldn’t be possible!
Cher

Cher is known for her eccentric and daring fashion choices. It is no surprise that with all of her fashion risks, there are some fashion fails.

Cher’s sheer black gown by American designer Bob Mackie worn to the 60th Academy Awards in 1988, speaks more Vegas Showgirl than Oscar winner. Certainly not an admirable choice for such an occasion!

Diane Keaton
Diane Keaton is certainly known for her androgynous style.

Her choice to wear a black Ralph Lauren men’s suit, complete with black bowler hat to the 76th Academy Awards in 2004 was a definite miss. Diane looked more Charlie Chaplin than Oscar royalty.
Whoopi Goldberg
Whoopi Goldberg wore a purple satin suit dress with green lining and brocade trousers to the 1993, 65th academy awards.

This hideous choice was from a Beverly Hills Boutique, and makes Whoopi look more Toad from Wind in the Willows than starlet!
Kim Basinger
Kim Basinger opted to design her own gown for the 62nd Academy Awards in 1990, where she wore a white satin princess style frock, topped with a half jacket on one side with gold lettering, and on the other a tight white glove that looked like an injury rather than a fashion choice.
Tilda Swinton

Tilda Swinton embodies eccentricity perfectly, with her daring choices and mostly impeccable style.

However, Tilda’s choice of wearing the black long-sleeved Lanvin dress that looks like a garbage bag for the 80th Academy Awards in 2008 was misguided. A risk that definitely did not pay off.

Bjork
One of the most infamous Oscar dresses of all time was Bjork’s white swan dress by Macedonian designer, Marjan Pejorki. It was worn in 2001 at the 73rd Academy Awards.
The choice was not only outlandish, but downright scary, especially with Bjork’s choice to simulate laying an egg on the red carpet. The dress has been parodied since, with it appearing in the movie ‘White Chicks’. Comedic value perhaps? On bravery alone, we commend Bjork for this outrageous choice!
Celine Dion
Every night in my dream I see you, I feel you.

Unfortunately, this John Galliano for Christian Dior white backward tuxedo that Celine Dion chose to wear to the 71st Academy Awards in 1999 cannot be unseen. Pity!
Geena Davis
Geena Davis opted for a white ruffled mini dress by costume designers Ruth Meyers and Bill Hargate to the 1992, 64th Academy Awards.

Although this choice was not a winner, Geena did go on to win Best Actress in a Leading Role for Thelma and Louise.
Demi Moore
Another self-designed disaster, another worst Oscar dress of all time!

Demi Moore designed her own gown for the 1989, 61st Academy Awards, which featured black bicycle shorts with lace edging, and a metallic lined skirt gown. Demi, Grandma wants her curtains back!
Uma Thurman
At the 76th Academy Awards in 2004, Uma Thurman opted for a white lace Christian Lacroix dress that featured a dreadful gold waistcoat.

It drowned Uma in excessive fabric, and failed to accentuate her svelte figure.
That concludes our list of the worst Oscar dresses of all time and remember for every dreadful gown there is an equally and opposing perfect ensemble!
