Movies to watch April weekend 2017

With the public holidays well and truly over and the kids back at school, we need to make the most of our weekends. One way to guarantee a brilliant break is to stream some newly released films at home - and we've got just the list you need.

RESIDENT EVIL: THE FINAL CHAPTER

As the sixth and final installment in the popular Resident Evil horror series, this action-packed film wraps up humanity's battle against the Undead. And with Alice being the only survivor of the apocalypse, she must return to where the nightmare began – The Hive in Raccoon City  – where the enemy is gathering its forces for a final strike.

If you love all things zombies, horror and action, this film is sure to make your weekend a little more exciting this weekend.

MOONLIGHT
Winning the title of Best Motion Picture (Drama) at the 2017 Academy Awards, this coming-of-age film follows the life of a young black man from childhood to adulthood as he struggles to find his place in the world.

Growing up in a rough neighbourhood of Miami, the main character Chiron sees plenty of challenges thrown his way as he struggles to come to terms with his sexuality and identity. From physical abuse to dabbling with drug dealing, Moonlight is not afraid to touch on the real issues in a way that will provoke thought and real emotion.

LIVE BY NIGHT
Directed by and starring Gone Girl's Ben Affleck as the film's lead, Live By Night is set in the roaring '20s when prohibition laws are haven't stopped the flow of booze in an underground network of gangster-run speakeasies.

The opportunity to gain power and money is there for any man with enough ambition and nerve and Joe Coughlin (Affleck), the son of the Boston Police Superintendent, long ago turned his back on his strict upbringing for the spoils of being an outlaw. You'll love his cheeky attitude and ruthless moves to achieve success.

A UNITED KINGDOM
If heart-warming, inspirational true stories are your thing, you'll love A United Kingdom. The newly released film follows the tale of Seretse Khama, King of Bechuanaland (modern Botswana), and Ruth Williams, the London office worker he married in 1947.

The film addresses the fierce opposition from both their families and the British and South African governments, but shows that despite everything, real love can outweigh any obstacle with the couple showing real bravery and committment at a time of massive segregation.

SPLIT

Though Kevin (James McAvoy) has evidenced 23 split personalities to his trusted psychiatrist, Dr Fletcher, there remains one still submerged who is set to materialise and dominate all the others.

With one personality compelled to abduct three teenage girs, Kevin reaches a war for survival among all of those contained within him as the walls between his compartments shatter apart. This one is guaranteed to play with your head a little bit, but McAvoy's performance will have you hooked until the very end.
